Teaching Dance from a Distance

We know that there are quite a few dancers who teach Indian classical dances in the U.S.

We have the opportunity to see many of their students perform. Yet we don’t often hear about their experiences and views on teaching ancient dance forms whose roots are across the seas.  We don’t often hear about how they got their start, or the challenges they face in teaching from a distance.  This two-part series is an attempt to capture a little bit of that.

There are many wonderful teachers in the DC area. Here are some thoughts from a few of them to start with. If there is interest in hearing more, drop us a line and perhaps we can expand.

May I please share a favorite quote of mine ? “The mediocre teacher tells. The good teacher explains. The superior teacher demonstrates. The great teacher inspires.”

A student learns from the Teacher as much as the Teacher learns from the student . It is a two way process. The student should worship the ” Roots” to which he/she belongs ( the parampara) but by the same token he/she should know how to branch out on his/her own . A teacher is only a ” support” not a crutch!

Great Video Presentation by the three leading gurus in the D.C . Metro area . Is it a coincidence or what that these Three gurus will be showcasing their students’ dance shows in Murugan Temple, Lanham, Md, this evening at 6:00 pm . Best wishes .

Thank you so very much to all 3 gurus for an excellent presentation. It was super informative and inspiring. As a upcoming teacher, it was lovely to watch the how to’s and listening to all your experiences was beautiful. Thank you again for the effort.

Lakshmi Aunty I had the privilege of meeting you at one of your Lecture demonstrations.
